That is a loaded question. The words âHell yeahâ dangled on her tongue but she swallowed them back.
âI was stopping by to tell you I was taking the afternoon to walk around and do some more exploring. There were a few things I didnât see when I was out with Ren. Since you had an issue with it last time, I was giving you notice. No, Iâve not finished, but I need to walk away for a bit.â
She turned from him and reached for the door sheâd stepped through in time to hear him threaten to take everything from a man. Her reality wasnât welcoming to her. It had been wonderful to imagine that while hardened, yes, that he still had a soul, but that comment right there had stomped on her silly fantasy.
âPeach.â
One word. Slow and yet with more power than a thousand suns, welded her to the spot and her hand drifted back to her side.
He didnât say anything but she felt him at her back. It was impossible not to know he had moved behind her. No, she hadnât heard his footsteps, but the man was so fucking warm, smelled delicious and his presence wasnât anything a blind man wouldnât be able to see.
She squeezed her eyes shut when his large palm settled on the small of her back. âLetâs go.â
âWhat?â Daisy turned and lifted her head to stare at him.
A heavy wool overcoat covered his shoulders and he stood there, jaw fixed as he gazed down at her, his gray eyes slashing.
He opened the door and nudged her through. âYou need a break and Iâll escort you.â
Shocked couldnât even begin to describe her emotions. Monica lifted her blue gaze to the two of them, eyebrows rising.
âHold my calls, Monica. Iâm escorting Ms. Wentz around.â
âYes, sir.â
âStop looking so shocked. Iâve been known to go outside.â
âForgive my skepticism, sir. Itâs still daylight out and I thought vampires didnât handle that well even though itâs raining. And as that vampiric dragon, letâs face it, you donât, well, people, sir.â
âWhy do I keep you on?â he asked, guiding Daisy to the elevator. âItâs been at least a year since I ate my last villager.â
âYou keep me on for the simple reason Iâm the only one who isnât scared of your bark or your bite, sir. And Iâm pretty sure you just ate one today.â
The glare he sent her didnât even make her blink. He shook his head. âSee you tomorrow, Monica.â
Daisy was trying to wrap her head around the entire situation as well as keep the smile off her face. One, that he had just invited himself along on her expedition. Two, that his secretary had not only dared to mock him and lived to tell the tale, but he appeared to have teased back.
âYouâre going to be cold wearing that.â
She dragged her gaze up from the carpet of the elevator car to find him watching her, that stare of his unblinking.
âWhy are you doing this?â
He calmly lifted one eyebrow. âDoing what? Riding down in the elevator?â
âBeing bossy.
